Rachel Cook, ABRSM’s Customer Strategy Manager

Earlier this year we launched Teacher Voices, our new customer panel made up of music teachers from across the UK and Ireland. Teacher Voices gives us another way to find out what teachers want from ABRSM and how they feel about a whole range of music education topics and issues.

Since setting up the panel we’ve run online surveys and discussions on a wide range of topics, including:

  • adapted instruments;
  • ABRSM articles, resources, books and apps;
  • teaching adult learners;
  • how students find a teacher;
  • attitudes to music theory;
  • CPD for teachers;
  • piano exams … and much more.

Feedback is helping us with immediate projects as well as those at the early stages of development. Here are a few examples of how we’re using the results:

  • Views on the piano syllabus are feeding into work on the next syllabus, which we’ll be publishing in 2018.
  • As we make plans to publish more articles and resources on our website, it’s been great to find out what teachers want to learn more about, including: singing, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading, being an examiner, dyslexia, adult learners and primary school music making.
  • Our survey asking about technology in classrooms will help us as we create new resources for schools.
  • We’ll be carrying out more detailed research on adapted instruments to ensure that our policy in this area is up to date and relevant.

This is just a snapshot of the kind of things we’ve been asking and it doesn’t stop here. In the coming months we’ll be covering adult learning, woodwind books and our ARSM diploma, to name just a few.

It’s been a fascinating and rewarding few months, and I’d like to say a very big thank you to all the teachers who have taken part in Teacher Voices so far!

Interested in taking part in Teacher Voices? We’re full up at the moment, but you can find out more and join the waiting list at www.abrsm.org/teachervoices. We’ll let you know if a space comes up. In the meantime, we always welcome feedback and ideas of any kind. Just get in touch!
