We support music education globally

We reinvest in music education through a number of different initiatives. We provide individual scholarships, we support national organisations and community projects both in the UK and internationally. We also contribute to the body of research that provides insight into music teaching and learning, the barriers to musical progress and changes that are happening over time.

We believe that working together with others brings the best value for everyone involved in learning, teaching and performing music. We collaborate with our partners to develop skills, resources and leadership in the sector, to open up access and opportunity to progress, to drive diversity and inclusion, and to be champions for music learning in all its forms.

How we do it

As Classic FM's partner in music education, we jointly aim to raise the profile of music teaching and support teachers. Initiatives have included Shine (our 2017 free event celebrating music teaching and learning) and Classical 100 (a free online resource for UK primary schools).

With support from Arts Council England, we set up the Music Commission, a fundamental review of how to best support progression in music. We've also worked with Music Mark and the Greater London Authority to develop Learn Music London, a free online guide to help parents find music-learning opportunities for their children.

We help to ensure that musicians are equipped with the confidence and skills to convey their artistic ideas and direct ensembles, so that they're ready to inspire and nurture the next generation of musicians. We've worked with Southbank Sinfonia on their audience-engagement programme, and we continue to support the Royal Philharmonic Society's Women Conductors programme.

We're extremely proud of our work with the National Youth ensembles. We sponsor the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the National Open Youth Orchestra, as well as the National Children's Orchestras, the National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. These organisations deliver carefully designed education programmes that bring excellent musical opportunities to a wide range of young people via their work with schools and music hubs. Our International Sponsorship Fund directly supports similar initiatives globally.

Music provides opportunities to collaborate and communicate, experiment and enjoy, at all stages and in all styles. To highlight this, we seek to work more with organisations that reach beyond classical repertoire and have a focus on inclusivity and diversity. We’re excited to be a founding sponsor of The National Open Youth Orchestra, that collaborates with cutting-edge composers to create exciting new music for a diverse range of musicians and instruments and to sponsor Tinderbox whose mission is to combine high-quality experimental work with a drive to be inclusive, and create original, exciting works.
